Visual Fields
The visual field test is a subjective measure of central and peripheral vision, known to some as "side vision", and is used by Dr. Economouto assist in Glaucoma diagnoses while determining the severity of the Glaucomatouseye. The most common visual field test uses a light spot that is repeatedly presented in different areas of your peripheral vision. Less common testing may be performed by a technician manually moving a target to map areas of damage.
SLT ( Selective Laser Treatment )
SLT is a painless, cool laser treatment performed in office . A topical numbing drop is applied in your eye, no anesthesia is used/neccessary . You will need to bring a driver . Post op care is minimal with the application of artificial tears (provided in office ) for the next 24 hours.
Benefits:
• lowers Intra-ocular Pressure ( IOP), 2019 : Indicated for the reduction of IOP. (AAO) equating to less topical medication.
• Preserves your vision.
• painless in office treatment
• Minimal recovery time :
and can be successfully performed yearly.
• Cool Laser - Non thermal (safe & effective)
Laser settings are customized for your eye, and set by Dr. Economou.

Find out more about Glaucoma surgery by visiting the links below :
Glaucoma is a general term for a family of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. The optic nerve is located in the back of the eye and relays information from the eye to the brain.
Elevated pressure inside the eye creates stress on the optic nerve. If the optic nerve is damaged, vision loss occurs. In most cases, glaucoma has no pain or other symptoms until noticeable vision lossis present.
Who is at Risk?
Your risk for glaucoma increases after the age of 40. African Americans are more likely than Caucasians to be diagnosed with glaucoma. Other risk factors include:
Diabetes
Cardiac/Hypertension
Eye injury
Eye tumor
Use of cortico-steroids
Family historyof the disease is the leading risk factor.
A Yag capsulotomy is a special laser treatment used to improve your vision. It is a simple, commonly performed procedure which is very safe. Dr. Economouperforms Yag Laser procedures in office (no patient down time, fast recovery).
Ahmed Valve & Shunt
A Glaucoma valve is a medical shunt used in the treatment of Glaucoma to reduce the eye's intra-ocular pressure (IOP).
The device works through bypassing the trabecular meshwork and redirecting the outflow of aqueous humour through a small tube, into an outlet chamber or bleb. The IOP generally decreases from approximately 33 to 10 MmHg, by removing aqueous.
The flow tube is inserted into the anterior chamber of the eye and the plate is implanted underneath the conjunctiva to allow flow of aqueous fluid out of the eye.
The first-generation Moltenoand other non-valved implants , sometimes require the ligation of the tube until the bleb formed is mildly fibrosed and water-tight. This is done to reduce postoperative hypotony – sudden drop in postoperative intra-ocular pressure (IOP).
Valved implants such as the Ahmed glaucoma valve attempt to control postoperative hypotony by using a mechanical valve.
Second and third generation Molteno implants incorporate a biological valve and studies show considerable improvement in postoperative outcome.
Baervedlt shunts (non-valved) have been shown to have lower rates of surgical failure than Ahmed shunts (valved),[10][11] this may be related to the high rate of valve failure, or to the larger plate surface of the Baerveldt shunt.range 2.75 micro liters/min.[1]

"I have participated in several FDA trials and research while continuing to extend my skill and knowledge speaking around the world. I stay active in the Science and treatment of Glaucoma and utilize the most ground breaking approach when treating. There is no cookie cutter approach. Glaucoma is a serious and debilitating disease. I have dedicated my life to preserving vision while treating Glaucoma successfully and aggressively".
Views on Glaucoma surgery
At times it is needed, However; surgery should always be the last option. It is essential to exhaust other methods prior to cutting the eye. Other surgeons jump too quickly on the surgical band wagon, leaving little room for future treatment. At times others even utilize experimental procedures. It is my philosophy that all patients should be diagnosed and aggressively treated with only FDA approved techniques, while minimizing ocular surgery on the eye. This can be successfully achieved using OMNI. When surgery is needed, I use an outpatient surgery center to shorten the patients cost and down time. I only utilize current, FDA approved medications first, then move appropriately to in-office minor surgery, and as, Ahmed valve and last resort - full surgery on the eye".
If surgery is needed, most of the time no hospitalization is required. Dr. Economou has 25 years of successful Glaucoma treatment and surgery experience with a patient base exceeding 20,000 successful patients.
